k. Krauss
Description
[Edit]Less-tall rock with interesting features. Friendly base area. Routes about 40 ft tall. Facing mainly SW.
Cool weather days nice in afternoon due to favorable exposure. Much is shaded by mature trees, so not as hot as might expect on hot afternoons.
Top-Roping: Quick simple access to top of cliff to set up anchors for Top-Rope -- up around right side.
Name: Hans Krauss pioneered some famous routes in the Gunks, also in the Dolomites. Sometimes climbed and traveled for climbing with Bonnie Prudden. But instead of adding more climbing achievements, he virtually invented modern sport medicine. Although trained as a surgeon, he promoted using non-surgical techniques for treating injuries and alleviating pain, and advocated including exercise for recovery instead of mainly "bed rest". Wrote best-selling book for relieving pain without drugs, and organized a nationwide program to teach it to people.
warning: Loose rock is still a concern in this sector. Belayer or other members of party should not stand anywhere near underneath the climber or underneath a leader setting up top anchor.
. . . (Lots of vegetation on this rock as of 2018. Be prepared when climbing to navigate around protruding trees and branches, and dealing with holds slippery with grass, lichen, moss, dirt).
