Sidewinder

FA Craig Luebben and Thor Kieser, April 1990

Description

A Craig Luebben offwidth masterpiece. This is one of the most elegant and sustained offwidth pitches in the desert. If you are an offwidth climber it is an absolute must-do. It is rumored that Luebben invented the

sidewinding

technique for this spectacular pitch. The pitch requires every offwidth technique from calf-locks, to knee locks, to arm-bars and chicken wings as well as a challenging 60' of

sidewinding with a run-out chimney exit ~ Pamela Shanti Pack

Location

Sidewinder is on the North side of Long Canyon 0.7 miles up canyon from Maverick Buttress or 0.1 miles up canyon from the fallen pillar. The route climbs a wide crack system up a left facing dihedral to a ledge.

Protection

Standard desert rack, heavy on the wide pro -- 2-4x Blue Big Bros and/or BD 7 and BD 8
